December 2021

Dear Parent/Carer,

Orchard School Work Experience: 14-18 February 2022

As you are aware, we will be running our work experience week in February next year.

The main aim of the work experience is to help prepare students for the transition from school to work. It is a fantastic opportunity for students to gain valuable work skills and is important for employers to see that students are well rounded individuals who have learnt experience directly from the workplace. Colleges and sixth forms also often ask about work experience in their post 16 interviews.

We understand that it is a particularly challenging time to find a placement with all the covid restrictions currently in place, but there are still employers out there who are willing to offer placements.

If your child has not yet secured a placement, the Christmas break will be an ideal time for them to focus on contacting employers.

The placement does not need to be for the whole week; even a couple of days can give students a valuable insight into a workplace.

So how can you help:

  •  Are they able to come and work with you / a family friend / a colleague / friend of yours? If yes, all that I need are the health and work placement forms to be completed.
  • Encourage them to call, email and go into local various workplaces. The more employers they are contacting, the better their chances of being offered a placement.
  •  If they have still been unsuccessful, encourage them to come and see me after the Christmas break. I may be able to give them some ideas and help them to contact employers

Once I have the employer agreement and health forms back signed by you and the employer, their work experience is confirmed.

If you have any questions, please do feel free to contact me.

Yours sincerely

Rachel Thorne, Careers and Employability Lead
