Work Experience

At Orchard School Bristol, we work in collaboration with a number of local businesses and organisations to provide our students with valuable work experience, and opportunities to develop new skills and build their confidence.

Work experience allows students to immerse themselves in the 'world of work', and discover what different types of jobs and careers are available to them. Taking part in work experience can also provide you with a fantastic reference for when you apply to college, or for an apprenticeship. Find out more about Post-16 Options, here

To prepare students for work experience, we support them in:

  • Mock interviews;
  • Writing applications, CVs and cover letters;
  • Using Veryan Software;
  • Finding a meaningful placement via one-to-ones.

Work experience week will be taking place from 3rd-7th July 2017. Year 10s are expected to have completed and returned the employer response form (see in the attachments at the bottom of this page) with a work experience place by 1st March 2017. For more information about how to apply for placements, please read our Work Experience Handbook.

Who we work with

We have built valuable connections with reputable businesses/organisations, including ASDAN, PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) and Santander. We are the only school in Bristol to have students undergoing work experience with PwC. Also, OSB student Oliwia Wiernicka was the first learner to undertake ASDAN's new work experience programme.

In addition, we are in regular contact with former students of Orchard School Bristol, who offer their time to talk with our students, and inspire them about their future career choices.

Quote from PricewaterhouseCoopers:

It was a real pleasure welcoming 2 students from the OSB to PwC. We provided a structured week of work placements across several departments in our company to give the students a real taste of working life. The students were able to work within Tax, Audit, Consulting and Admin departments and were encouraged to complete assignments, ask questions and provide feedback on each section that they worked in. This not only gave them a good understanding of what careers are on offer, but how each individual works as a team to make the business a success. It also provided our staff with mentoring opportunities and experiences outside of their normal day job. It was our first year offering work experience and the feedback from both students and staff has been without exception positive. We are really looking forward to offering places to more students from the OSB in the coming year.

Quote from Santander:

Santander has worked closely with Orchard School over the last three years to help students understand Retail Banking through work experience placements. During their placements students get to observe and question all the team from our Cashiers, Personal Bankers, Specialist Advisors and Branch Managers to understand what it’s like working in a bank branch. Also on the programme, they can learn about the different types of products customers need and how they can keep their money safe.  Last year we expanded our work experience placements to four branches and we also now include practice job interviews as part of the placement. We look forward to supporting Orchard School in the future.
