Orchard embraces School Diversity Week

It was rainbows galore at Orchard during School Diversity Week as students rallied together to raise funds for Just Like Us - an LGBT+ charity for young people.
There were rainbow flags, ribbons, cupcakes, jars of sweets and even shoelaces.
School Diversity Week is an annual campaign which celebrates LGBT+ equality in schools across the UK. As part of celebrations, we raised over £135 for Just Like Us.
The money was raised through holding a delicious rainbow bake sale for staff and students, and selling rainbow ribbons and badges.
In addition to this, Orchard School’s LGBT+ group organised an assembly to raise awareness about the issues they face.
An LGBT+-themed quiz was also held during tutor times.
Orchard staff members Laura Donnelly and Rob Flitter supported the students with organising the various events.
Mr Flitter, who coordinates our LGBTQ+ group, said: “School Diversity Week has undoubtedly empowered the students in the LGBTQ+ group, as they helped plan, organise and run a whole range of events that have raised awareness about LGBTQ+ issues.
“Equally as important is the impact their efforts will have had on many other young people in the school community.
“Diversity Week has provoked countless important conversations about gender, sexuality and identity, and the maturity, respect and openness with which the whole school has embraced the experience has been a real testament to our young people in particular.”
Ms Donnelly said: “Our staff and students have whole heartedly embraced Diversity Week.
“It had been a real privilege to see our students come together in support of LGBT+ youth and get involved with activities planned by our LGBT+ group.
“It has been wonderful to see our young people openly discuss LGBT+ issues both with curiosity and respect for each other.
“Diversity Week has been a resounding success and we look forward to making this bigger and better next year!”
