Pilot Cat is an inspiration to us all

Published on 10/05/17

Inspiring and empowering - these were just some of the words used to describe British Airways' senior pilot Cat Burton when she visited Orchard School Bristol last month.

Cat, who transitioned to become a woman at 61, spoke to our Year 7s about her journey and the heartwarming response she received from British Airways when she informed them of her decision.

Our students were given the opportunity to ask anonymous questions to Cat, which she read out on pieces of paper in the assembly. Some were related to her transition and her flying career, others were messages of thanks and remarks about what an inspiring woman she was.

Cat gave fantastic responses to each of the questions, and even eased some of students' nerves about flying simply by giving a demonstration using a piece of paper.

However, there was one message that was clear to our students: "You only have one life ... just be yourself".
