Exploring our identities using art

Published on 17/03/17

Last week, Year 10 GCSE Art students took part in a practical workshop run by local artist Karanjit Panesar and Letty Clarke from the Arnolfini Gallery.

During the jam packed two hours students reflected on the theme of identity, asking questions such as 'what makes you, you?' and worked collaboratively to produce large scale silhouette drawings first of ourselves and then each other.

We also reflected on public figures and our perceptions of them, enabling us to build a chart of the elements that make up a person's identity.

We spent the latter part of the session writing scripts and designing props to be used in the final activity - a collaborative film, using 2 live camera feeds channelled through broadcasting software which allows video layers to be combined using chroma key (green screen) imaging technology.

It was a really enjoyable day and feedback from students was great.

Jonas Lekutis said: "My favourite part of the day was the prop making but I also liked the collaborative drawing and film making, it was cool to try out new techniques."
