Orchard School was incredibly heartened to have received this wonderful appraisal of our Macbeth performance at the Redgrave Theatre last November:
Congratulations to the cast and crew of Orchard School on their wonderful production of Macbeth at The Redgrave Theatre. This was an accomplished and original production, and I’d like to highlight a few key elements which really stood out for me:
- From the very beginning we were drawn into a dark, mysterious world with the cast milling around the stage, then creating the tree from which the witches emerged. It really highlighted for me the way that play begins with the resolution of chaos, only for the witches to send everything spiralling again.
- I loved the choral work, which added to the tense, mysterious atmosphere. I thought the cast echoing ‘out damn spot’ was particularly powerful.
- The choice to have two Lady Macbeths was a bold one, which really paid off. It gave a great sense of the complexity of the character, and of the various subtexts to the Macbeths’ relationship.
- You told a really clear story, underpinned by great command of the language and bold, intelligent character choices.
I’d also like to commend the cast on their ensemble work, which hugely impressed me. I thought they created the locations of the play very effectively, adding a real depth and believability to the story.
This production was bold, mysterious and tense. Huge congratulations to all the cast and crew who made it happen.
I hope to see Orchard School in the Festival again next year.
